Family in Quebec

The original records stored in the County Archives in Kirkwall Library are in four boxes numbered D15-1, D15-2, D15-3 & D15-4; the archives given here are presented in the same sequence.  Each box contains a number of bundled documents, each bundle having its own identification.  In some cases the bundle is in the form of a book or bound document containing a number of individually numbered pages.  Box D15-4 in particular contains some rolled maps.  A brief description of the contents of each box is given below:

Box D15-1

1837 - 1838 Volume, cash book of estate of Coubister.
1/2 1706 - 1826 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly legal, regarding the estate of Coubister.
1/3 Circa 1760 - 1790 Volume, beginning as a notebook for geometry and trigonometry, and continuing as a letterbook. Letters mainly from Quebec in the name of Johnston & Purse, but others from and to Stromness.  Interpreted as being the personal letterbook of John Johnston. 
1/4 1790 - 1826 Bundle of printed papers, mainly legal, dealing with the dispute between Joshua Johnston and Rev. Robert Sands of Swanbister.
1/5 1744 - 1844 Bundle of printed papers, arguments between merchants of Stromness and magistrates and Town Council of Kirkwall (1744) and further papers concerning dispute between Joshua Johnston and Rev. Robert Sands of Swanbister (1835 - 1844)
1/6 1733 - 1788 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly legal, including loyal address from the listed leading merchants of Stromness (1746), also appointment of a schoolmaster for Stromness (1733).
1/7 Circa 1738 - 1770 Bundle of draft legal papers, probably drawn up by Joshua Johnston, writer in Stromness.
1/8 1812 - 1891 Bundle of miscellaneous papers found loose in box.

1846 - 1892 Bundle of miscellaneous accounts, receipts etc. Mainly household or personal.
2/2 1800 - 1857 Bundle of miscellaneous accounts and vouchers; estate, household and personal.
2/3 1798 Printed: Journal of a Tour Through the Northern Counties of Scotland and the Orkney Isles in Autumn 1797. Undertaken with a view to promote the knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Printed by J.Ritchie, Edinburgh.
2/4 1811 - 1813 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, letters, accounts, printed forms relating to the winding up of the estate of Peter Irwin of Whitby in the County of York.  Includes probate of the will of the said Peter Irwin.
2/5 1747 - 1793 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly accounts, copy legal papers, contracts etc. Some correspondence relating to business and estate affairs. References to kelp. Affairs of Joshua Johnston; tutory and curatory of William Halcro. Correspondence with Thomas Balfour, 1783.
2/6 1781 - 1831 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly legal, also several printed income tax forms. lncludes Disposition and Assignation of Cecilia Halcro to Margaret Halcro.
2/7 1788 - 1800 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly copy legal documents, including Horning and poinding, Johnston v. Sands (1788) and Replies of Thomas Sands to the Anwers of Joshua Johnston (1794).
2/8 1742 - 1790 Bundle of miscellaneous vouchers and accounts belonging to Joshua Johnston.
2/9 1862 - 1904 Bundle of papers regarding Orphir church, manse and school. Accounts for repairs, assessment for the poor, minutes of meetings of the Heritors.
2/10 1801 - 1834 Bundle of accounts, and business correspondence. Mainly relates to the estate of Coubister, affairs of John Johnston. Includes state of the claims of Thomas Sands, pursuer against John Johnston, 1833.
2/11 1816 - 1860 Bundle of accounts, and business correspondence. Mainly relates to the estate of Coubister, affairs of John Johnston.
2/12 1734 - 1779 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, mainly bonds and dispositions, including Disposition of a quoy of land in Stromness in favour of William Halcro the younger of Coubister (1734) and Heritable bonds: Joshua Johnston, Margaret and Jean Halcro, tutors for William Halcro, to Andrew Cruikshank (1770, 1775 & 1779).
2/13 1783 - 1801 Bundle of miscellaneous accounts and vouchers - household personal expenses. Miss Cecilia Halcro.
2/14 1775 - 1780 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, correspondence, receipts, legal papers relating to payment of Superior Duties for the estate of Coubister.
2/15 1781 - 1832 Bundle of miscellaneous papers, correspondence, receipts, legal papers relating to payment of Superior Duties for the estate of Coubister.
2/16 1756 - 1799 Bundle of correspondence, accounts, legal papers relating to payment of money transacted in a heritable bond between William Halcro of Coubister and William Honeyman of Graemsay dated 1 June 1756.
2/17 1780 - 1830 Bundle of miscellaneous business and legal correspondence, estate accounts, papers relative to Superior Duties for the land of lreland.
2/18 1773 - 1825 Bundle of miscellaneous correspondence, accounts, petitions, protests, mainly regarding estate business, superior duties, cess, feu duties.
2/19 1758 - 1851 Small bundle of correspondence, accounts and other papers addressed to Joshua Johnston, John Johnston, and William Halcro regarding payment of cess tax and of arrears in such payment.

1763 - 1773 Bundle of letters from John Johnston in Charleston, South Carolina, and London, to his brother Joshua Johnston, writer in Stromness. Personal and family news.
3/2 1779 - 1813 Miscellaneous personal letters to Joshua Johnston and John Johnston, Stromness, from family and friends.
3/3 1769 - 1833 Miscellaneous letters, mainly to Joshua Johnston giving family news, from William Halcro in London and from his daughter, Margaret, in Quebec. Several business letters from Robert Laing, Samuel Murray and Samuel Laing.
3/4 1712 - 1801 Bundle of miscellaneous papers and correspondence (mainly to Joshua Johnston from relatives) and legal papers. Includes Inventory of moveable goods, gear and others pertaining to Adam Isbister after the decease of Bess Johnston, his spouse (1712) and Letter to Mrs. Johnston, Stromness, from her nephew, Joseph lsbister in London, regarding estate of her deceased husband (1758).
3/5 1794 - 1820 Bundle of letters to Mrs. Johnston from L.Gillespie in Edinburgh, an old friend.
3/6 1766 - 1823 Bundle of letters, family and personal: mainly from Crafts Mackay to his uncle Joshua Johnston or his cousin John Johnston.
3/7 1780 - 1816 Miscellaneous letters, mainly personal, giving family news to John Johnston. Several letters from David Bews (1816), and James Dickson. Also several letters to John Johnston and his wife from his brother-in-law, Henry Taylor in London.
3/8 1800 - 1812 Letters from Ann Taylor to her sister-in-law, Mrs. John Johnston and her nephew Henry Johnston - personal and family affairs.
3/9 1769 - 1809 Small bundle of short letters to Joshua Johnston and later to Mrs. Johnston from Robert Laing, Samuel Murray, William Halcro: business, superior duties, possibility of sale of William Halcro's estate.
